MANGO MIRAGE
It seems as though the vast majority of movie soundtracks from the ‘80’s consisted of a combination of Kenny Loggins plus countless acts that used digital synthesizers to varying levels of success. If there was an ‘80’s movie soundtrack that didn’t involve Kenny Loggins, then Tangerine Dream was probably involved. Tangerine Dream used digital synthesizers very successfully - probably because they didn’t try to use them to replicate analog instruments. Instead they used synths to create new sounds and song types altogether. Their songs weren’t hum-able melodies or hooky lyrics. Instead - these were mood pieces (“Incidental Music” as they’re known in the biz). They were there to set the scene - to establish a feeling. If you’re a Gen X-er, then you surely recall tracks like “The Dream Is Always The Same” from the film “Risky Business”. If you’re too young to know Risky Business, all the incidental music in “Stranger Things” is an homage to Tangerine Dream. Here is my homage.
